Door permissions, known as "perms" in game, control who has access to opening and closing doors. The systems are slightly different at Guild Provinces and Nation Castles.
Nation Castle Perms
At nation castles, the guild who capped the flag has permissions. This means that ONLY members from that guild can open the wooden doors on gatehouses during a siege. All other players will simply teleport through during a siege.
Having some members of that guild present at a siege defense is very helpful for the defenders.
The primary effect of opening doors is that when doors are open, guards will go through the gatehouse at attempt to attack the enemy. Keeping doors closed until the right moment allows guards out at the crucial moment.
During non-siege times, all players can open all doors at Nation Castles.
Guild Province Perms
Guilds can use the Upgrade menu at the Architect's Table to select who can open or teleport through doors on gatehouses and the bastion building by clicking on the key icon on the map layer. Permissions can be set differently at each layer of defenses, so multiple Key icons may need their permissions set.
Guilds can also select who can operate their defensive devices such as ballistas and boiling oils. Careful control of these devices ensures that only trusted individuals have access to use them.
