Smelting and Roasting is part of the Character Development system, and is accessed by pressing ['] (Quote). With this skill tree the player uses various furnaces to create create metal bars and other crafting materials.
To progress in the Smelting and Roasting tree vertically, produce any material using the campfire to begin, and work your way up from there. For the campfire, you can also roast meat and cook simple meals to earn experience. Horizontal progress provides an 8% speed boost for each completed node.
Workstations
Smelting is done at player created workstations called Constructions. The workstations are crafted directly inside the inventory, meaning they are not created at any other workshop. These objects can be placed in the world by right clicking them and selecting "use". Placing them in certain areas grants production speed bonuses. There are 4 workstations:
- Campfire Lowest temp, suitable for heating simple meals and creating quicklime and iron lumps.
- Bloomery Low temp, suitable for creating chamottes, iron lumps and steel.
- Furnace Medium temp, suitable for creating quartz glass, steel and dziwer.
- Metallurgic Furnace High temp, suitable for creating dziwer and bulat.
These can be filled with fuel and crafting materials, turned on and then left for a while to create items while you go do something else, like fight or farm or craft.
- All 4 of these workstations may be built and running simultaneously once unlocked, allowing for multiplied production.
- The Workstation screen only shows speed bonuses gained from location placement. It does not show bonuses gained from skilling up in the tree, but these bonuses should still automatically apply.
Fuel
Fuel is required to heat any campfire or furnace. There are three primary fuels: Billets, charcoal, and coal. Each fuel burns at different maximum temperatures. Any crafted item requiring heat must reach at least its minimum temperature. Some items like iron lumps can be created by simply heating billets, while items like Bulat Bar require hotter burning coal.
- Billets - Max temp 4
- Charcoal - Max temp 5
- Coal - Max temp 6
As the flames consume the fuel, the temperature of the workstation decreases, so remember to come by every now and then to check on the heat and use the bellows to pump it up.

Smelting and Roasting Districts
Crafting districts can be found in most nation locations and all capital cities. They are flat, fenced-off areas where smelting workstations and carpentry tables can be placed. Placing a campfire, bloomery, furnace or metallurgic furnace in this area will grant speed production bonuses depending on the location.
- Workstations placed in loot enabled areas can be 100% emptied by an invading enemy nation force.
- Workstations are not lootable by anyone in your nation.
- Speed production bonuses are higher in loot enabled areas.
- Speed production bonuses are highest in loot enabled areas inside a Smelting District.
- Smelting districts do not need to be leveled up or improved with the Bastion System.
- Guilds owning Guild Provinces may place Smelting Districts for some Economic Points.
| Workstation Location | Open World: Non-Loot | Open World: Loot | Smelting District: Non-Loot | Smelting District: Loot | Smelting District: Guild Province |
| Production Speed | 100% | 125% | 125% | 150% | 150% |
Smelting Districts in Guild Provinces
Guild leaders and vice leaders can use the Build Menu at their Guild Provinces to add a Smelting and Roasting District. These will have the 150% speed bonus because they will be placed in loot enabled areas.
- In Freebuild smelting districts can clip with other buildings and structures, but the smelting district must be placed BEFORE the building.
- Any objects placed here can be destroyed by the guild leader. If destroyed, the objects inside the furnaces are lost permanently.
- If the guild leader wants to move the smelting district during a castle rebuild and anyone's furnaces are present, they should communicate that furnaces need to be emptied so that castle construction can take place.
- Players are advised to always empty their furnaces when not in use, and especially before a State of War at their castle.
Smelting Yield
Each smelting action can produce between 1 and 2 bars.
Factors that affect if you get an extra bar when smelting:
1. Looting chance bonus. This takes into account your Nation Bonus and any other Loot Chance bonuses you may have active such as Cards.
2. Mentor Points. The more the better.
3. Temperature. The ideal temp for the item you're crafting has the best chance for bonuses. A temp that is too high or low reduces the chances from this variable a lot.
