Also known as the "Dig Pit", the excavation pit is a place in the safe zone in the capital city for people to dig up treasures while AFK. The primary reason people use the dig pit is to level up their Archaeology skill in Character Development.
Excavation pits are located in the safe zone near each capital city. To start digging, equip a shovel, stand in the excavation area and press E. The better shovel you have, the shorter amount of time it takes to get an item, and the better chance you have of getting a better item. You gain access to using better shovels by leveling up your Archaeology skill digging with the tier 1 Novice's Shovel and unlocking further progression from there.
You will dig up a variety of crafting materials, bags, and treasure maps. All of these items can be used in crafting or disassembled for crafting XP.
You will want to open up at least 20 spaces in your inventory to gather items if you plan on AFKing for a while, so that the materials you gather have somewhere to go.
Digging is a fully AFK activity and can be an alternative to logging out.
Replacing your shovel frequently is a good idea, because damaged shovels complete the dig action much slower than fresh ones.
