"Tokening" is another term for beginning Siege Preparations at a Guild Province. It is a necessary step of State of War and competing for a guild province. A "token" costs 4 gold and can be purchased by an officer, vice leader, or leader by clicking the guild province flag they wish to begin siege preparations against during the four hour Siege Preparations Window.
A "token attempt" is successful when Siege Preparations reach 100% at the enemy guild province. This is achieved by killing NPCs and enemy guild players in the vicinity of the province being tokened.
